when i run windows updates, i download all the critical updates, then, check again.... i have all the critical updates downloaded, but when i click on optional and hardware updates, it brings me back to the windows update page again. why cant i download all the windows updates?

The first thing to do when you are at the update site is click on the update history link to see what has already been installed. When going for updates one fast way to see what has and what hasn't been downloaded and installed is to click on the custom rather then express install to select the updates you want at that time. The express option simply pushes the MS only.

yes, i understand. i run express install until there are no updates... then i run custom install. when i click on the optional and hardware, it just brings me back to the update page... i have reformatted 3 times because of this.....

Reformatting your dirve is pointless and a waste of time. If there are no updates available in the optional sections of hardwares and softwares then you don't have anything there to worry about. Over time something will eventually come up and be ready to grab then. I use the custom option right from the start due to not wanting WMP 11 overwriting WMP 10 on two XP installations here. I'm about to try removing 11 on Vista to see the 10 version can go on to replace it.

but see, i tried that, and it diddnt work. i cant install windows defender or windows media player 11 because i need a rollup update...

what you're describing is exactly what happened to me when the sp2 installer crashed 1/2 way through.

windows update thought i already had sp2, but i couldn't install any new software because i didn't have sp2 installed.

Windows Defender is a joke on itself. You can find better freewares or free versions of AVG, Ad-Aware, Spyware Terminator, and some other ones that will do a far better job. WMP 10 is the best one seen so far. That has all of the support needed for various media types and is favored over the newer Vista geared 11 version by several. If I can get 10 running on Vista that would be great news here.

one of the updates probably crashed during installation.

i don't know any way to fix this.

i had to re-install windows after sp2 crashed.

but right when i reformatted, i done windows updates.... finished all the critical, rebooted, then i click on optional, and it opens a smaller window inside of the windows update window

And that window is where you can click on the details link to see what update is ready for download and installation. A new Defender update was just put on here since everything else was already updated. When you click the install button there you will see a little flashing scroll bar showing the progress as it downloads and then installs.
