Can't find my DVDRW Drive on my computer!

hi

i have a dell laptop with windows vista. i cant find my dvdrw drive ever since lastnight. this morning i tried to burn a dvd but it didn't work. it can read anything you put into the drive. also, i went into start then computer and it wasn't there, there was no dvdrw drive icon. never came back. how an i get this back? i need to get this back as soon as possible! any help would be great!!
 
Try booting from a CD. if you have a Dell, there should be an option as you boot(like pressing F12) that brings up a boot menu. If you can boot to say a Windows CD, then you know it's a software problem. If not, you probably have a bad drive.
 
it boots with the windows cd. so it must be a software problem! it gotta be. i tried to get the driver on www.dell.com but i ain't sure which one i gotta download. i tried 2 of the windows vista files but they wasn't the right ones. any way i can get the icon back in the folder called my computer? i dunno what else to do. is there a way i can repair windows vista without deleting any files i have already saved on my computer?
 
ok...can anyone tell me what to type in to get this info? i have no idea about this and i want another persons opinion. also, would be great if someone can find a lnk telling me what to do step by step!
