Can't get graphics card into motherboard

Hi all,

New to this forum and have a problem that I would really appreciate any help with.

Basically I bought a PC off ebay and have been having loads of trouble with.

The latest is that I noticed when I was dragging a window around it was juddery and delayed I thought it must be the Graphics card so tried to download the drivers but this seemed to send the computer into a spaz and wouldn't install.

Eventually I decided to take the side off and discovered that the card appeared not to be seated properly. Great, I thought, simple fix. But no.

Problem is the card just wont seem to go in far enough for me to screw it onto the case. The metal part that the monitor plugs in to seems to long at the opposite and from where it screws to the case meaning it fouls on the case before slotting in fully. The card is a ATI Radeon HD 4850 with 512 Ram. The board is Asus M2N32-SLI Deluxe/Wireless Edition and the case is a Asus VENTO 3600. Funny thing is that the monitor works when plugged into the card.

I was tempted to file/cut the metal down but thought better of it but am at a loss of what I can do. The operating system is genuine Windows XP Pro.

Operating system is freshly installed and seller insists it was working fine and doesn't seem to know what I'm on about. Another thing I notice is that Belarc advisor doesn't seem to find the graphics card.

Any help would be greatly appreciated in this matter.

ebay link is;

Kind regards :confused::(:confused:

The ebay link won't work as its a private listing so no one will be able to view it. You will have to post the picture another way. What slot are you trying to put the card in, the blue or the black?

Look to see if the motherboard is mounted on stand offs.

John, the ebay link works for me, I'm not logged in if that makes a difference.

I clicked on the link again and can see it now. Yeah, no standoffs would make sense.

Ah Ha ! So I just googled the standoffs, assume these go under the motherboard (as I'm looking down on it with the side off) to allow clearance between the underside of the motherboard and the far side of the case?

If this is the case am I going to have to take the whole thing apart to install these items?

Apologies, I'm a complete novice and there is a lot to learn! :D

Hold off on that.
After rethinking if there were no stand-offs the screw mount would hit the case.

It looks seated properly from what I could make out in the ebay pic.
The metal prong on the bottom of the face plate goes into a slot on the case.
Make sure you are getting it in there, I have played with that before.

standoffs would make it taller, not the other way round. I agree with the idea of maybe its missing the slot. look to be sure it is properly seating in the bracket slot.

Thanks chaps but too late :rolleyes:ha. Standoffs are in place. Card seems to seat right down when board is out but no matter how much fiddling the card doesn't sit into the case slot as soon as attached to the motherboard. Seems like the card is to wide or something:confused:

Card in blue slot BTW, Correct?

:confused:

Thanks again folks :)

Some cases have a slot in the case that the tab on the bottom the the video cards back plate has to fit into. Sometimes that tab will get bent and the card wont go all the way in.

Thanks for the suggestion :) I did think something like that but my next step was, whilst the mother board was out i measured between the edge of the card slot to the top of the card. Then I put the board back in and the distance was the same (103mm) I then thought that maybe there was something stuck in the slot the card goes into but it's all clear.

Next step is to launch computer out the window closely followed by myself;):eek::confused::(:mad:

Ok, I am now on the computer in question. Everything seems to work but when i drag a window or even scroll down in internet explorer it seems really laggy, to the point I scroll one click and it lopes down in about 2 seconds. Also everytim I try to download the drivers it now says server error.

I really appreciate the help I have received and if anyone needs advice on bicycles or bathrooms then please ask. I feel like a mooch getting this free advice.;)
