can't get hp vectra p200Mhz to recognize new 40gb drive

I recently installed a new 40gb drive using the 2nd 40pin socket on the ide hard drive ribbon cable. I didn't set the jumper for new drive because it did not have its own controller. When I rebooted the system I received the error: ide device #1 Error. I am running windows 2000 server. The BIOS IS PhoenixBIOS Version 4.05.1. When I set Device #1 in configuration section to [Auto] to get the computer to recognize the drive, I still get same error. Any help in getting the system to recognize drive would be appreciated thank you. cmartin2

This is an old machine and probably your mother board will not recognize the 40GB hard disk unless you do some upgrades to the BIOS.

I think narafa is right it's a HD that's too big, but are the jumpers set up properly on the drive?
