Can't get more than 1 tab on Firefox if I click desktop icons

Hello
I could always just click a desktop icon to open another tab but now if I'm on a site I can't open another by clicking on the desktop shortcuts unless it's the first one I click or I slide it over and it takes the place of the one that was open. It use to work and I don't know why it stopped or how to correct it.

Ummm... I think you might be a bit confused on some terminology....

However, if you middle click a link, it should open in a new tab, and also Ctrl+T works too.
 
Yes it should and has for many months but now for instance if I click on an icon (link) on my desk top it opens but if I click on any second or third link it does nothing whereas it would normally just open another tab so that both or as many as you want pages were in the tab bar.
