Can't get my new PC to boot

Hey guys, new to the boards, and new to PC builds.

So quick summary. Bought a new motherboard (ASUS P5K EPU), new CPU (Intel Duo Core 2.53 GHZ), also a vid card & wireless networking card for a desktop/tower. I have it powered up, but cannot get it to load windows XP. I had Windows on my hard drive, but figured i'd need to reload it once I was done basically rebuilding everything. Yesterday it did try to boot, noticed the hardware was different, asked if I wanted to boot in safe mode, safe mode with networking, normal etc. Tried all, but would continue a loop back to that screen. Today i don't even get that far, and I didn't change anything.

So, I have a CD/DVD drive, hard drive via ribbon cable connected to my EIDE slot on the motherboard. Hard drive is set for cable select, grey connector on the HD, black connector on the DVD (which I have swapped once already) and the blue on the EIDE connector on the mother board. I can get to the BIOS no problem. I cannot get it to read my WIN XP disc though. It tells me "Reboot and Select proper Boot device or Insert Boot Media in selected Boot device and press a key."

I have tried to change the boot sequence from HD to DVD & vice versa with no luck. What am I missing? I am a newbie, so please help. Thanks,

Ok, from that it sounds like your trying to do the right thing and format. You cant put a copy of window from an old computer into a new one with different hardware and expect it to work.

As for the boot issue, instead of using cable select set the hard drive as master and the dvd drive to slave. I hate cable select, always gives problems.

Hope this helps :)
