Can't get online

Here's the deal. I have a computer that was just updated to Windows XP and was running great for a few days. Then the owner purchased and installed Zone Alarm. After installing he could no longer get online.

I uninstalled the zone alarm but still nothing. The IP has been released but won't renew. Every time you turn on the PC you can see it searching in the system tray for as long as you let it. Briefly I thought the NIC was bad and installed a new one but the problem persists.

The modem and connections are all good. It is definitely something in the PC.

Any thoughts?

Great nickname :) just reading clive at the moment :P

Anyways, back to the problem, so its not connecting at your network either and a different NIC has been tried.

Sounds like either a driver error or a conflict with some other software on there, i'm no expert on internet connections but i could only suggest going into add remove programs and removing any un necessary items. Then run spyware on it to ensure theres nothing in there that might be preventing connecting.

Try uninstalling the nic and reinstalling it if that doesnt work boot to the xp cd and do a chkdsk/r and try again also look in the network settings under the properties and ensure its all set to automaticall obtain all its settings...

Uninstalling all network related drivers, then rebooting at letting windows detect new hardware and installing them from the Win CD does the trick for me whenever something doesn't seem to be working right.
