cant get sound and picture at the same time in hdmi on lcd tv

I have a dvi to hdmi cable and I can get a great picture. I have a seperate cable from onboard sound to audio in. I can get the sound as long as the video cable is unplugged.
Plug in the hdmi video cable to the back of the tv and the sound goes off. Has anyone seen this before.

Hopefully your video card comes with an spdif input to allow for audio to go through the card through hdmi. Plug the cable from the spdif output from the motherboard into the spdif input on your video card. Then sound and video are ran through your video card via the HDMI cable out to your tv.
