cant get to view my desk top,illegal operation will close

My other computer used to work good untill I tried to download the windows 2005 upgrade it found files in need of repairing and when I clicked repair ,the free program asked for money ,so I clicked cancell after that the upgrade 2005 was poping up all the time saying it was being loaded I couldnt get rid of it .it was popping up all the time and shutting things out ,so I tried erasing things and overdid it .Now my cp only gets as far as the windows 98 se page then goes all green like background and a window pops up saying an illegal operation has been performed and computer is shutting down .If I click on the close button or the x button the computer shuts off ..since I cant even get to my files is there something I can do to cure this ?

It wasn't a new O/S just a pop up called windows 2005 that claimed to be free it was suposed to repair damaged files and scan for them .It found some and when I asked it to repair them it wanted money ..I just got it poping up and dont know where it was from ( I thought MSN ,but maybe not ) I'm sending the complete details that it showed was causing the problem ..here's what I sent to another forum . --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I'm sending this on my wifes computer as mine is not working.
After trying to download a free program called windows 2005 which was to scan my cp for errors etc.I found they wanted money to repair files so clicked on cancell .It didnt cancell ,instead kept on trying to download without showing progress ,I unpluged pc turned it back on and windows 2005 started downloading again ..I went to uninstall and it didnt seem to work so I tried erasing a few files ..Any way now when turning the cp on I get the dos page then picture of windows 98se then just background color with no Icons and I get a box " This program has performed an illegal operation ,if the problem persists contact the program vendor .If I click close or click on the X the machine shuts off . If I click details here is what I get

Thats in details ,which means nothing to me .I tried to but my windows 98se install disc in but it didnt do a thing probably as I'm unable to uninstall windows thats in there now ..I would like to repair my machine but if I have to I would erase it all and start over again ,but i don't even know how to do that ..
Any help will be very much appreciated ..Neil
PS I do not know very much at all about going into the dos page except you click DEL when it askes you to ,I have no been there but watched my friend go there on his cp once.
