Can't get windows to recognize my new hard drive

I have a Dell 8400 series and it has a 80GB Maxtor Serial ATA hard drive in it. I then bought a new Western Digital 160Gb hard drive for it but when I opened the case to my computer and then package for my hard drive i realized that the hard drive was IDE ATA 40 pin hookup and i didn't have any open slots fro IDE but i had 3 open SATA slots open. So i got bought a Ultra ATA to Serial ATA convertor and i hooked everything up to my motherboard and power supply. However this did not work. I can't get my computer to recognize the new hard drive what-so-ever. Power is getting to the drive cause I could feel the disk spinning inside but when I go into Administrative Tools and then Computer Managment and scan for new hardware it doesn't pick up the hard drive I added. I am getting pretty frustrated and I don't really know what to do. I'll take any help or suggestions.

(note: I've not actually had to bother with SATA/IDE conversion yet, so this is based entirely off of inferrences made from various things I've read) Since it is plugged into the SATA port, technically, it may just want you to add it to the disc array alongside your other drive. Or, just to test and make sure it's not the drives fault, you could try removing the IDE cable from one of your peripheral devices and attach the new hard drive.

AHAHHA I HAVE THE ANSWER! I Have the same exact computer, and purchased the SAME HD! HAHAHAHHAHA

It is rather easy actually, Turn the ports on in bios.. and the magic step..

Remove the jumper pin from the hard drive! YES! PULL IT OUT! I know what your thinking.... Just Try it!

When your computer restarts press f2 or f8, like it says *press f? to enter setup" In there it will show the 4 ports, you need to enable the next one you plugged the sata into...
