Cant hook up Wireless Router ANY HELP?

Hello all,
I just recently bought a Netgear Wireless-G Router WGR617 V9 for about 60 bucks and for some reason, it would hook up right. I can't use my new laptop until I get this working. When i hook it up it can't find the network. I can't even take the cable out of the back of my desktop and plug it in the side of my laptop it says "unidentified network" and want even work. Its an easy set up in idiot can hook this up. I just don't know why it want work right. Any help?

So it runs fine on your pc? If your attempting to get wireless to the laptop, you may need to configure the router first.

Check your router settings make sure u update the firmware on the router. Check netgear's site. Then reset the router by pushing the button on the back of the router for 10 - 20sec it will reset. Then to see if you are able to see your network. The default netork should be the model of the router or netgear, you will need to change the name of it later on if you want to in the router settings. Let me know if you are able to connect to the network.

well, when I try and hook the router up, I can't even get internet though my modem. So I unhook everything and plug the Ethernet cable back into the modem and it works fine. I don't know what I'm doing wrong. The install seems fairly simple.
