when i try to install a os the install button is greyed out..and its like that for each kind of os i have.. and when i try doing it through the cd and when i restart my comptuer and run the cd i get a thing saying that there's no hard drives...it weird..right now im currently running windows vista

Trying to downgrade Vista to XP is not gonna be an easy task. Make sure you have access to xp drivers for all your hardware before you start the install. Your existing problem right now is that that you need the SATA controller driver before the XP installer will see the hard drive. Unless you are computer savvy, you should leave this task to someone more qualified. But like I said, finding XP drivers will be the most difficult task. Which laptop do you have?

gateway m-series...

it worked before but i think its because i have a active partition and i cant get rid of it because its active..lol...how do i get rid of it.?

You won't be able to use the XP cd until you get the SATA controller driver slipstreamed into a new XP install cd. If you have an actual Vista install cd you could format the drive that way but you don't get one with most laptops. What is the exact model of lapop M ????.

Gateway M-6846 Notebook

i also got a vista cd not from the purchase of the laptop though..i had to get it seperate

go into your bios menu change the order to

floppy
cd
harddrive

then try but if not get a format disk usually best in floppy drive follow on screen instructions and put installation disk in when it says on the screen and you should be fine:)
