Can't locate downloaded files, under Vista.

I just replaced a problematic pc (which had XP on it) with a new one that came with the Vista operating system. But I am now finding that I cannot locate any downloaded files. When I download, I can see indication that the files are being downloaded, but after all is over & done - I can't find those files anywhere. I never had such an issue with XP, and (with XP) I was given the opportunity to select which folder the downloaded files would be sent to. I do not like Vista, but can't afford a stand-alone XP OS (this new pc really taxed my pockets). But if anyone can help me with the above issue, I would be deeply grateful.

Usually vista will default to the downloads folder, go to my computer and click on downloads in the favorites bar on the left hand side.

The first question would be, what browser are you using? IE saves all files to the "Downloads" folder under your profile by default, just go to start menu and hit your name and it should be there. I assume that you could also snoop around the settings of whatever browser you're using and find the default save location for your downloads...

From the start button go to “Search” and chose “For Files or Folders.” When the box comes up select “Advanced Search.” In Location chose “Local Hard Drive C:” (Not Indexed Locations). Put a check in the box, “Include non-indexed, hidden, and systems files.” In “Name” put…Well you know what to put there. Hit “Search.” When the contents of the search appear you can right click the selection and chose “Open file location” and you will be taken to where the file resides. Hope this helps.

I have a vast preference for (and use) Firefox, over and above IE.

if you use firefox, in the browser, go to tools -> options. on the first tab of the pop up, you should see the directory of your downloaded files
