can't recognize language

I backed up stuff from my old computer onto a dvd, and the files are there and show the sizes, but when i open up the file, i get something like "ÿûÒ ¢\Ð{cp¼ªê0g/n!sBMmíÃ4®(…œ½¸" but a lot longer. Does anyone know how to covert this to normal text, or if i will be able to get my data back?

Im not sure, but you probably dont have a certain dll or something of that sort, and it causes the segments of coding to come up instead of the program itself.
