Can't Recognize New Hard Drive, only old hard drive.

Ughhhh I got the weirdest problem here.

i got this Dell box here, it's a Demented 8300 (hehehe i mean dimension) the Hard Drive that came with it works fine. I can set the new hard drive I got as a slave, and the bios will recognize it, but if i remove the old hard drive (I want to get rid of the old hard drive) the bios won't recognize the new drive, and it doesn't matter what master/slave or which connector it's plugged into. I can only get the new hard drive to recognize if the old hard drive is plugged in and the new drive must be set to master.

WTF????

I've heard of dells requiring some file on the hard drive or something. This is one confusing problem. and from what I can tell the old hard drive has only one partition.

and i know the hard drive works cause I tried it on another computer.

Check how you're plugging in this hard drive, i'm assuming it's IDE, sometimes if you want to run a drive as single you don't need any jumper, so try plugging it into the master plug on the cable (the one on the end) and pull off the jumper. Try this with the new hard drive by it's self no other drives plugged in with it.

AdmnPower, thats actually exactly what it was, I found out by getting pissed off enough to go to the drive manufacturers website and actually looking up a manual for it, and it said it on there to set it as single but i didn't mention that on the on the drive label nor on the back for master and slave. The weird thing is the drive worked fine on my normal computer (that I built) even though I tried to set it to master, it would still work even if it was the only drive on the IDE cable. The weird thing was is there were unmarked possible jumper settings, and so I even tried those and it still didn't work, i didn't try just unplugging the jumper.

When I saw that in the drive manual online i just hit my head and went "D'oh! I'm a moron" but it wasn't on the label so how was I supposed to know.

Whatever happened to simple Master/Slave?
