can't register vista

my computer kept crashing, often after hours of painstaking video editing. Problem was diagnosed as main board malfunction so I decided to scrap it out. I am now unable to load vista on my old backup computer. Is an os earmarked for only one computer? it seems I should be able to use it on the replacement machine? comments appreciated.

Pretty much any version of Windows is registered for only one copy of Windows. If you're trying to use this copy of Windows on another PC, you'll need to call Microsoft and ask the copy to be re-activated on the other PC.

I may not have stated the situation well. The old computer has been scrapped out. I want to activate my software on my old backup computer which will be the only one using this OS. It will not automatically register, message from MS says the OS is being used on another computer, it is not, the previous computer no longer exists. Is there a human I can call to discuss the matter?

you'll need to call MS (use the toll free number) and follow the steps until you get to a human. then tell them your situation, 99% chance they will activate it for you.

It detected a different hardware signature, so it threw a red flag thinking the same copy was going on a different computer.

Which it is :P
If it's the retail version, you'd have to uninstall before installing it on another computer. If it's the OEM, you'd have to ring up Microsoft and explain your situation. Most of the time, they'll let it slide.

This is a retail version but since the compter has been scrapped out an uninstallation would be redundant.
