Can't run .exe files

I'm having the same problem thanks to some stupid virus. I've tried system restore like three times and it's not working. I keep reading forums that say download this and that but every time I try to open a file it asks me which program I want to open it with. Is there some manual way to get the .exe back without downloading anything?

I'm moving your issue to a new thread to avoid confusion.

Try downloading rkill from this website.

http://www.technibble.com/rkill-repair-tool-of-the-week/

Click on the third link under where it says downloads. You want to use rkill.scr. Then run the program and it should temporarily disable any active infections stopping you from running exe files. Then perform the following procedure.

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from here or here and save it to your desktop.
  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version. Please keep updating until it says you have the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • A log will be saved automatically which you can access by clicking on the Logs tab within Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

If you continue to experience problems after doing this, please post a HijackThis log by doing the following:

Download the HijackThis installer from here.
Run the installer and choose Install, indicating that you accept the licence agreement. The installer will place a shortcut on your desktop and launch HijackThis.

Click Do a system scan and save a logfile

Most of what HijackThis lists will be harmless or even essential, don't fix anything yet.

Post the logfile that HijackThis produces along with the Malwarebytes Anti-Malware log

Wow. I just learned something new I could use when I'm at the Kennedy Exchange! Thanks John :)

So I was able to do some exeFix on my computer but when I open it it says "Not all data was successfully written to the registry. Some keys are open by the system or other processes." Any ideas?

Corrupt registry settings or some virus, malware or third party product can change the default configuration for running EXE files. This may lead to failed operation when you try to run EXE files....

Try these steps to rectify problem:

1. Click Start, and then click Run.

2. Type "command.com" , and then press Enter. (A DOS window opens.)

3. Type the following:

"cd\"

"cd \windows"

Press Enter after typing each one.

4. Type copy "regedit.exe regedit.com" and then press Enter.

5. Type "start regedit.com" and then press Enter.

6. Navigate to and select the key:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\exefile\shell\open\command

7. In the right pane, double-click the (Default) value.

8. Delete the current value data, and then type:

"%1" %*

Tip: Type the characters: quote-percent-one-quote-space-percent-asterisk.

9. Close Regedit utility.

Note: If you are using Windows XP and you enable "System Restore" , you need to
disable "System Restore" in "Safe Mode" before using the instructions above.
