Can't see computers on network.

I have a ethernet network setup between a MacBook Pro and PC (Windows 7) connected by an ethernet switch. I would like to be able to share files between the two computers but they do not show up on the network. I believe the network connection has been made because I can ping the computers. I just can't see them on the network. I'm not that well versed in networking, especially across platforms, so any help is appreciated.

i think you need a 3rd party tool for cross platform im not sure i dont usally use file sharing i just run across my house plugging in countless USB memory sticks into different computers

On the PC or Mac just select a folder you want to share, share it, then on the Mac go to Finder > Connect to Server > smb://computername or on the PC, go to run > \\computername\share.

You don't need special software to share across platform, both can utilize samba.
