can't see other computers on the network

I'm having trouble getting my desktop to recognize other computers in the office network. All computers are behind the same router. I have a laptop plugged into the network. It's the one I'm testing with. Both these computers have file sharing enabled. Both have their firewalls down. Both can ping each other. Both are part of the same workgroup (called "WORKGROUP").

The laptop seems to have no problem seeing other computers on the network. I can see them in My Network Places under view workgroup computers. The desktop I'm working with however doesn't show up. On the desktop, no other computers show up in My Network Places except for some folder with our WAN IP address. When I click it, I get taken to our FTP site on our server (also on the office network).

How can I get my desktop to see at least the laptop I testing with, and at most all other computers on the network that the laptop does?

I am try to find out if the nic card is good in the desktop. please try to answer these questions.

1, is this router a wireless router combine with ethernet ports?
2, is the desktop connected to the internet? if is,
3, is the desktop connect to interenet through the ethernet card or wireless?
4, does the two computers have the same protocols bind to the network cards?

What is the network name of the desktop? Windows does not network the best, sometimes you need to type \\computername\ into the Windows Explorer address bar. You can fin d the name by pressing WinKey+pause/break and clicking the Computer Name tab. The full computer name listing is the one you type.

This problem has been solved. I went to Tools > Folder Options > view > unchecked "use simple file sharing".

Thanks everyone for their help.
