Can't shutdown XP

The use of the system restore to go back a day before the problem started
would be one idea. Something did effect your system files however. A run of
the system file checker utility included in Windows could also help. You enter
"sfc /scannow" in either the Run prompt on the Start menu or in the Command
prompt in Accessories to start this running. An installation disk may be needed
if damaged or missing files need to be replaced.

If neither of these methods see results, not likely but possible, the nest step
would be the "install to repair" method to correct Windows while not effecting
the current installation. The method for that is given in detail at: http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm
Remember while still preserving files and folders this is a last option with XP.
It is effective however when following instriction carefully.
