Can't write to CD

I’m running XP Pro on a new Dell 8400. I have a CD-RW &DVD-RW drive. I ran Partition magic, split up my HD and assigned drive letter M & N to these drives. Everything worked fine for months. Dell sent me a new driver for the DVD drive and I installed it. It undid the forced drive letter and changed it to J (the first letter after my HD) Some days later I tried to run Partition Magic and received an error saying there is a drive letter that can not be identified.

I then reset the DVD drive back to N. PMagic still did not work. I then tried to back up my data to the CD drive on M, which I had done nothing to. I got a message that the drive is either full or write-locked. I can’t delete anything from the CD-RW disk, but I can read it OK. I put the disk in the DVD drive and I can read/write just fine. In addition, when I right click the drive in Explorer, the “format” option does NOT appear for the CD drive. It does show up when I right click the DVD drive. I went into Computer Management and device properties and it states the drive is enabled and functioning properly.

There is something making this drive look like it’s locked. What could it be?

Using the computer management from the administrative tools you can change the drive letters of partitions, restore them back to what you have had before and try. Keep record of every change you make, things might go wrong and you might need to go a step bacward.
