stupid question but can an AMD board use a NVIDIA video card or only ATI?

It can use both. But to run crossfire with two AMD/ATI cards you have to have a AMD or Intel crossfire Chip board, and to run SLI with two nvidia cards you have to have a Nvidia chipset SLI chip board. But yes you can run a single Nvidia or AMD/ATI card with either.

The board only supports one card, you can use a AMD/ATI or a Nvidia card.
