Career in the theoretical side of computing

Hello, Basically I've always been interested in computing for a career but I am yet to find a career I could see my self doing. I don't necessarily want to be sat at a computer all day. What I'm looking for is something much more theoretical.

I'm wondering if there are careers based heavily around the mathematics of computing or maybe where I'm researching how to improve computers or trying to discover new technology for computing.

Electronic engineering and theoretical physics, then a career in academia or at about a handful of companies...
