cat 6 and cat 5e

I have a cat 6 cable and it wont work on the modem, only cat 5e cables work on it, the modem looks pretty old but i really couldnt tell you because i just moved into an apartment and thats what i got. looking on the internet there doesnt seem to be that many differances between the cables. My question is do older modems not support cat 6 cables?

i dont know if cat6 will work on a modem, but i have a cat6 cord, hooked up 2 my router, and it works...

there is no advantage to using CAT6 currently.

Cat 5 10mb -1000mb Ethernet
Cat 6 1GB - 10GB Ethernet
