Cause of death?

I was ripping apart a computer given to me to repair when I noticed this... Initially I considered doing the heatgun repair as the nVidia chipsets from the era tend to overheat/warp/screw up... Has anyone ever seen this thermal paste...stuff run like this? I'm beginning to wonder if the chipset actually cooked itself rather than started warping.

-note-
Just returned from toasting the board as I've been doing to get this Compaq running again. Unfortunately this computer still won't go, so I guess it'll be used for parts.

that can't be good... try the heatgun method and stick some AS5 or something on there.

I did and there was no change. I think it gone (or there's another problem). And just for the heck of it I brought my little IR thermometer down with me. The board hit 430*C while I heated it.
