CD burner not burning

I'm having trouble getting my CD burner to burn CDs. Sometimes it will work but most of the time it won't. It goes all the way through the process and at the end instead it spitting out the CD it says an error occurd and gives me like 3 choices. Delete the files, save and try later, and something else. Could it be the computer software? I just use whatever came with XP Home. The files I'm trying to burn that don't work one time have worked at another that's why I think it's the software. I ran some kind of diagnostic on the drive and it said it was working properly. Is there some other CD burning software I can download (preferably freeware) to use? Anybody know of something? Thanks.

This happened to me before, and after hours of messing with it, I just decided to buy a cheap generic CD burner from Ebay
 
are u trying to burn music or just files? cause if its music id suggest gettin Winamp it works with almost anytype of file. if its data then try Roxio Easycd creator...thats worked well for me
