CD Drive doesn't recognize any CDs....

For some reason my CD drive on my IDE slave doesn't work. It's plugged in and everything and even the computer displays it but for some reason it doesn't recognizes that it has a CD in it. It's the stock CD drive from a SR1550NX Compaq.

If you are putting in a blank cd-r you won't see anything but the drive being empty. If you can't switch to the drive with Windows Explorer while even a blank disk is in there you probably have a Windows glitch or a failed drive. What are you slaving the drive to? hard drive? other optical drive like dvd?

Are the jumpers on both drives set correctly? You know I have to ask that one. You could try mastering it by itself on the end of the second ide cable to see if the cable itself is the problem. If the drive suddenly worked the cable would be the thing to replace. Here the dvd drive is slaved to a cd writer. This way a cd drive not dvd drive is always seen as the "D" drive.

I'll check the jumpers but I doubt that's the issue since they are the same stock drives from my Compaq, one of the few components that haven't been messed with on my system. I considered the cable earlier but thought against it because the Master was still working. I'll switch the master and slave and maybe switch out the cable and see if that will work....

Normally I wouldn't really care about that POS drive but right now I have a Windows XP Pro OS disk on loan from my neighbor and I'm trying to copy it.... (That's legal, right......?) Anyway, he's ok with copying it.... I guess, because his is a copy too.....

After a process of elimination, I figured the CD drive crapped out so I guess I'll have to get a new one......

BTW, anyone know any CD burning/copying programs that only requires on optical drive to copy? I'm probably going to make a thread about it......
