cd drive installation problems

my old cd drive went out on me so i took a cd drive out of my friends old computer when i installed it, it says on the bootup screen set stand alone slave drive to master. i used the same hookups in the back as on the old one so whats the problem? also i got a 60gb hard drive from her do i just plug it in and it will read it? i have xp home

You might have to change/adjust the jumper settings, so that the drive works properly on the PC.

If you have a sata drive in your pc now, the hd may be a little harder.. adaptoprs, drivers, enabling in bios etc...
