CD Drive missing

Hello all,

I've got a bit of a strange problem and I haven't got a clue how to sort it out. I've got a Toshiba Portege laptop - a recent model with build in CD/DVD drive.

Last week it suddenly stopped recognising this drive. When I insert music CD's they are just not recognised. The drive has disappeared from my 'My Computer' page. What has gone wrong??!!

I ran a recommended fault finding programme from microsoft and it said there is no CD/DVD drive recognised. Its still under warranty if its a major fault.

Any tips gratefully received!!

Stacey.

Hi John,

From that thread I have tried the 'fix it for me' option but it says no CD/DVD attached. I'll try the 'let me fix it myself' and see if that works.

No sorry I don't know how to enter the bios. Is it easy to do??

Many thanks!!

for a Toshiba Portege laptop you need to turn your computer on and push f12 before the os boots. just keep pushing it until you see the blue screen. you should be looking to see if your optical drive is recognized here. it should be in the "main" tab.

i've had a similar problem with a old laptop i fixed yesterday. i installed windows using a cd, and an hour later i tried to install ms office using the cd. the cd would spin but nothing would happen and 'my computer' said there was no d: (including bios). i had to unscrew the bottom and remove the keyboard, and i realized that the optical drive was slightly skewed connecting to mb. replugged it and now it works fine
