Cd drive not working

My CD drive has stopped playing Cd's and when i put a Cd in, the computer doesn't recognise that a disk in the drive. Can someone help me figure this out.

I have brought a cd cleaner and as the drive is not reading the disks i can't get it to work. The computer says that there is nothing wrong with the device.
The make of the Cd rom is Goldstar Cd-rw.

Drivers? Cables? Conflicts? Windows Update might help too.
