Cd Drive opening at random

My cd drive won't stop opening, and its driving me crazy. It keeps opening re opening, etc. And it leaves the tray sticking out. What can I do to stop this?

Well, first check all power cables and data cables, if they are ok, give the drive a good hard thump, if it still carries on then im afraid you will need to either send the drive back or get a new one.

A new CD-RW drive will only set you back about £20 and a DVD-RW will only cost you around £50, for a standard CD-ROM drive you're only looking at about £5.

this could be the result of a virus or trojan. scan you comp with any good anti virus / spyware programs with the latest definitions (such as AVG, Adaware, Spybot)

i Have avd, and it found 6 infections (trojans and virus'), but it won't heal them. It simply says that it found them.

I scanned my computer with Panda Titanium Antivirus, and found 432 viruses. The problem still persisted, so my friend reformated it. And I still have the problem. I scanned it again and found 4 virus', and 30 minutes later I did it again and found 25. The problem is still persisting.

I'm with swift, I've been helping him out with the problem. We ran formatted the hard drive completely before installing the OS. This rules out a software problem. We also opened the computer and checked to make sure all of the cables were plugged in firmly, they were. I think that it is something wrong with the drive and it needs to be replaced. What do you think?

I had friends that had same issue one got one of those cleaning cd's and that solved the problem and the other just had a bad cd driver and had to return it back.

Ok are you installing an antivirus BEFORE connecting to the net or downloading stuff?

I've had the experience of a computer virus that can survive a drive reformat. To eliminate this possibility, delete the partition, create a new partition and format the drive.
