my cd drive is not under my computer or under the device hardware. i have tried to install the drivers from dell but none of the ones for a sony drive worked. the computer is a dell dimension 4600. i had 2 cd drives in before and both worked. i took one out to put in another computer and the drive in the dell stopped working. both connectors are in and the drive opens and closes. what can i do?

under the bios it says that the cd drive is not installed. i even put back in the other drive so that now 2 drives are connected. i am using parallel ata. i even switched out cables from another computer and that did not work.

Make sure your cables are all the way plugged in on both ends and check your jumper settings. When your BIOS can see it again then most likely Windows will be able to also.

On the your drive where the jumper is it should have settings listed for which pins the jumper is on. They should be something like Master, Slave, and Cable Select.+

A basic Guild on IDE settings.

oh ok. one is on master and the other one is on slave. this only happened when i removed one drive. i did not unistall the drive before i removed it, could that be the problem?

Did you shut your computer down before removing it? If so then no.

Is the cable plugged in the same way as when you removed the drive?

Similar Problem

Hi I have a similar problem and used the pc link to fix it. I have inserted the answer that I got below.
Has anyone any ideas what code 19 is and what I need to do now.
Autoplay has also stopped working and I don't know if the two things are connected.

All help gratefully accepted.

Windows was able to successfully install device driver software, but the driver software encountered a problem when it tried to run. The problem code is 19.

you could try a system restore to when it was working o.k or you could uninstall your drivers and reinstall them again with the latest ones

I have tried reinstalling and that did not work. Also I have tried system restore ( using three diffrent restore points) but keep getting a message that it has failed.
