cd/dvd drive not working and problem monitor

Hi, I'm new here and not completely computer literate .... I also wasn't sure if I should post this in this forum or accesories forum...

I have a conundrum...

We picked up our tower for our desktop out of storage. We did not keep the monitor as it was the size and weight of a boat anchor.

We purchased a flat panel monitor for the desktop computer.

The instructions state (and who reads those?? Surely not dh) DO NOT connect the monitor to the computer until the software is installed.

So, dh connects the monitor WITHOUT installing software first.

My CD drive does not work. I don't know if it is possibly because of the software not being installed for the monitor or not. My device manager says the cd drive IS working properly.

So I'm thinking, unplug everything (like the instructions say and dh did not do) and kinda start over.. (No dh didn't think of this as he doesn't yet know that the cd player isn't working.)

Conundrum..

HOW can I install the software (which will give me an install wizard) when I don't have a monitor to read how to install software if I can't hook up my monitor without installing the software???

Or do I just need another glass of wine and a good book??

tia for any info

firstly i can say that installing the monitor first shouldnt effect your cd-drive, but i would just try to install the software and see waht happens, and you might have to buy or borrow a new cd-drive if yours doesnt work.

IT WORKS!!!!!

Well, kinda..

I installed the software for the monitor and the drive works. I don't know what the problem exactly was tho.

We have a homeschooling software package. Some of the cd's won't work and some do.

I put in a music cd and it works now and before it didn't.

Can't get a dvd to work tho.

Maybe the drive is just dirty??

your drive could either be dirty or just too old, try getting a cd lens cleaner, and if that doesnt work, you will porbably need a new drive. (and you can get them for under $20)

you can probably ignore that.

if you've got optica drive problems, what you might need to do is to uninstall the drive from windows, reboot and let windows automatically reinstall the device for you. to do so, (1) control panel, (2) system, (3) hardware, (4) device manager, (5) expand the DVD/cd-rom drives entry, right click on thr troublesome drive and uninstall it. now simply reboot and let windows try and repair itself.

ok thats just plain wierd. what make/model was it?
