CD/DVD drive problem

I did a fresh install of XP. Now computer will not play a DVD. I installed
K-lite codec pack so the CD will play audio and open data cd.

When I try a dvd, it opens as if it will play, but in the
opened screen I get the message "Windows Media Player cannot play DVD video..."

Windows updates are current. When I try to update the
driver thru device manager it tells me that I have the newest driver.
Is there something else I can download to correct the non playing DVD?

I appreciate any help to resolve this. Thanks, JohnGo

It's been a while since I've used XP, but my recollection is that WMP10 needs to see another program installed that will play DVDs before WMP itself can play them.

For instance, WMP10 won't play DVDs on its own. But WMP10 will play DVDs if it senses, say, RealPlayer or VLC is installed, and uses those codecs. I tried the K-lite codec pack myself as you did, and it didn't work. After I installed RealPlayer, WMP10 would play DVDs.
