CD/DVD-Rom Drive help(newbie)

Hello all. I just have a quick, hopefully simple question. I need a new CD/DVD-Rom drive, but I'm not sure how to determine if it will work on my computer or not. I have an HP computer desktop, and I tried to look at the general system properties to try and figure it out, but I don't know what I'm looking for.

I found these cheap external ones that I would prefer to purchase because I don't have a lot of money(I realize they are only CD-Rom drives). Can anyone give me some pointers on how to tell what will and won't work?

Thanks for all your help!

Any external drive that uses USB will work for you. If you want to replace the internal drive they only run about $20-$30 and aren't too hard to switch out.

What is the model number of HP desktop do you have? Open the side of the case and tell us if you have a wide flat ribbon cable(IDE) going to the cdrom or small narrow cable(SATA) going to it. Replacing the internal drive is a much better solution then getting an external.

Just open it up and replace it with any one you have..they will all work as long you have the correct interface cable.
