If I burn a show to a CD-R disc, will it play in my DVD Player?

depends what DVD aplyer is in question, but typically and usually yes, you can

it probably needs to be in either vcd or svcd format though

As steve said, if its on a CD most of the time it needs to be in a form of VCD. But some new DVD players support MPEG-4, so you can add the video to it as data, and it should play in some drives.
