what program did you install? was it an os? did you use the drive to install it?

I have windows me and reformatted the computer with the disk that HP has. I did use the drive to reformat and it was working a little bit after that. I then installed america online and after that the drive would not work.

Try re-adding the hardware...goto control panel and look for add hardware do a search for it and see if it's not installed.

Try cycling the install-state:
To do so, (1) Control Panel, (2) System, (3) Hardware, (4) Device Manager, (5) Expand the DVD/CD-ROM Drives entry, right click on thr troublesome drive and uninstall it. Now simply reboot and let Windows try and repair itself.

Now if the CDROM entry isnt there then thats a different problem ;)

Thank you for your help. The searching for adding new hardware did not work, it didn't detect anything.

When I go into device manager I have the category disk drives and under that I have Generic IDE Disk Type 01. Should I try to delete that?

Thanks for trying to help.
