CD ROM no longer works on lap top

My lap top doesn't recognize my CD Rom no longer... I can't open it to put a CD in it when I'm using my computer. However, during reboot I can open the tray. Once I put a cd in, it still doesn't operate when using the computer...

Is my CD gone on my pc? If so should I buy an external one? My lap top is 8 years old but runs really well. It is Windows Vista.... Time to buy a new lap top or no??

Open up Device Manager (Right Click Computer>Manage then choose Device Manager on the left). Is there a yellow exclamation point anywhere?
