CD ROM with a battery...hmm?

For a little project I am undertaking, I need to make a CD drive function (i.e. the tray move in and out) with only a battery. Would a 9v be functional or am I gonna have to go for a heavy duty 12v? Any ideas would be most appreciated. Cheers.
 
How would you like to learn how to make a cd rom drive, any cd rom with an earphone jack and volume control will work, into one for your family auto? Plus you learn how to hook up the two voltages not one you will need in order to have it completely operational? http://www.hardwaresecrets.com/article/71 Let's see now a 12v ac adapter with a 5v battery? Or how about a 5v ac adapter with a 12v ...?
