I think so, i think you need to have it, sometimes it does the audio, sometimes it doesn't.

I've never plugged one in and never had a problem having sound from cdrom. In the old days of say windows 98 you had to I believe but not with todays technology.

No you dont need it, just make sure that in your Device Manager under your CD-ROM under properties that enable digital audio is checked. The wire was for old analog sound.
