I know ceewi is amazing with psu's

I have a hiper 530 watt type r psu and the system in my sig.

A couple of times my computer has just randomly shut down with no warning, as if the plug had been pulled out.

Also i think im getting a little bit of fps lag in cod which i think maybe a psu problem?

Do you think my psu is faulty? or is it something else causing the shut downs, in game is fine its crashed around 5 times on desktop basiclly idle. Has done it both overclocked and stock speeds.

Could it be a windows problem?

The random shutdowns are certainly one of the most common symptoms of a PSU problem, and would certainly be my first suspect in this case. Those particular PSUs use a number of Fuhjyyu capacitors on the secondary side, which are a brand of capacitors with a particularly high failure rate, particularly when the PSU is poorly ventilated. Since this sort of intermittent shutdown problem is often associated with faulty capacitors, it wouldn't surprise me if that were the case?

How old is the PSU? Is it still under warranty? If so, I'd RMA it, or at least test with another PSU if you have one on hand. If not, and you don't mind opening the PSU (you do need to take some care with this, but just examining it shouldn't be dangerous), take a look at the capacitors on the secondary side (where all the wires come into), and see if any are leaking electrolyte on the top. If so, it's a sure sign you need a new PSU. Be advised that if it is still under warranty, doing this will void that warranty.

Your lag in COD is less likely to be related. Windows problems are more often random restarts rather than loosing power all together, so wouldn't be my first suspect here.

Thanks a lot for your input. Its stil under warranty, and im not gonna open it up because of that. I guess if it happens one more time il try to RMA it - i f i get a brand new one in packagaing i may sell it and try to get a different power supply. Thanks for your help.

Also could it be a cpu / mothebroard or ram problem? or do they cause restarts not shut downs?

Im confused tho, i just ran an hour of OCCT and orthos at the same time and it was fine overclocked at 2.6 GHz and 1.45 V

RAM problems usually result in restarts or BSODs rather than sudden power loss, motherboard is a possibility. That your system doesn't shut down when you run Orthos doesn't really surprise me - high loads can certainly cause the supply to turn off, but these sort of problems are often intermittent, at least in the early stages.

Motherboard capa problem? Sounds like it's getting worse over time... I remember when you bought that PSU, back in the spring was it? Everyone was flaming you for buying Hiper and not going with something higher.

Hmmm i dont remember anyone flaming me from buy hiper, but i wish they had lol

Also i checked all the wires and it looked like the 6 pin PCI express cable wasnt push as far in as the other cables into my psu. So i pushed it in like 4 mm more and havent shut down since. Could this be the culprit, or is my system going to shut down again soon :(

Another update

I set my cpu to 2.67 GHz with 1.5 V and within a minute of being in windows it shut down. Although when ever my overclock has been unstable it has crashed or restarted, not shut down. So is this the cpu's fault, or PSU fault or the motherboard not being able to supply the voltage ??
