Celeron D to Pentium 4

Dell320

New Member
Hey guys new to the forum here and a big time computer noob. I just got a Dell Optiplex 320 (desktop version :(). Pretty basic system: Celeron D 3.06Ghz processor, 1Gb ram. I was looking to upgrade processors soon but was unsure if I could upgrade to a Pentium 4. Someone will sell me a NIB Pentium 4 524 3.06 processor with fan for 40 bucks. Will this upgrade work with my system? If so will it be just a matter of pulling off the stock fan and processor and switching in the new stuff or will additional service be needed?Any help, advice would be greatly appreciated, thanks in advance for your time.

If the processor is compatible with the motherboard you should be ok, as far as an upgrade goes a p4 is quite a bit better than a celeron however not exactly a powerhouse any any means. You should notice a difference. Find out what motherboard you have by using cpuZ and look to see what processors it supports.

Hi and thank you for the response. I went to CPU-Z and got the motherboard information. This is the information it gave me:

Model: 0UP453
Chipset: ATI : RS400/RC400/RC410 :Rev 01
Southbridge: ATI : SB600
Sensor: ITE : 830F

Then I checked out pcstats.com to see what they had to say with regard to support and compatibility for the RS400

http://www.pcstats.com/articleview.cfm?articleID=1789

It mentions that it "supports 800MHz FSB LGA775 Intel Pentium 4 processors and offers up PCI Express functionality". Does this mean the 524 HT Pentium 4processor this guy is selling me will work? Again thank you for your help, if im not being clear please let me know how I can help to make things better for you guys to understand. I really do suck at computers. thanks

That's a really good upgrade. You will definitely be pleased with the performance.
Pentium 4 is much faster, IMO, than a Celeron (not necessarily in boot time but loading times of applications etc).

With both the cache increase and dramatic increase in FSB, you'll definitely see your applications run a lot faster and smoother.

Thanks EGS !!, So do you think that with my motherboard this setup will work?

Need help upgrading from a Celeron D to Pentium 4 Processor

Hey,I need help upgrading my processor from a Intel Celeron 346(Codename Prescott)to a Intel Pentium 4 Processor.I have CPU-Z so i have all the info about this processor and motherboard but the other one i have to install Win98 and put CPU-Z on it so i can see.

I'm new to this site but I'm A+ Certified so i do know quite a bit about computers.I've had my computer for a few years and just wanted to see if i can do this upgrade without overloading/shorting out my motherboard and if its worthwhile.Computer is Compaq Presario SR1800NX 2 GB of DDR2 RAM.

Manufacturer:ASUSTek Computer INC.
Model:AGENA 1.02
Chipset:ATI RS400/RC400/RC410 Rev. 01
Southbridge:ATI SB400
Sensor:SMSC 7703

thats all the info i got from CPU-Z.

So be great to know if i can do the upgrade.

i also just noticed that the guy who asked this same question originally has a nearly identical motherboard as mine. The chipset is the same.

Update:Nevermind,i compared the two and my celeron is better. The processor is about 9 years old and this one is about 3-4.There were many Pentium 4's just depends which one. This one's codename was Northwood.Bus speed about 30 lower FSB about 100 lower multiplier 1x lower only thing higher was L2 cache by 256.Top if off the processor is 2.20 GHz mines 3.06 GHz.
