Centrino system not connecting

Hope you can help. My Acer aspire 1680 will not connect to the internet through the internal Centrino wireless system. I am using a Thomson Speedtouch 580 modem with my main PC hard wired into the modem. Running AOL9 1Meg broadband. The signal is excellent through the house. I get the message DNS server unavailable everytime I try to connect. I have fitted a Belkin card into the bus slot and all works fine using the Belkin wireless link. There is no encryption on the wireless link. I have already been onto AOL helpdesk and they took me through various set up proceedures then they gave up and said to contact Acer.
Someone already mentioned to me that the Centrino won't work unless the link is encrypted, is this what could be causing the problem and if so , what level of encryption is needed?
Any help appreciated.

Centrino wireless will work with anything, doesn't need an encryption to work (but encryption is recommended). Make sure you can connect to your router first. If you say you can get a signal but cannot get a connection, you may want to ry installing the netbeui or IPX/SPX/Netbios protocal in the network properties on your laptop. Same area where you can find your tcp/ip settitngs. The windows operating system doesn't install this by default (only tcp/ip). Most home networks/routers work better with this installed. After than, see if you can see other computers on your network. Also, is your laptop compatible with your router?

The IP address

on my Centrino network connection seems to be wrong and I'm getting limited or no connectivity message. How do I change the IP address. On my Pc it is 10.0.0.1 and on my laptop it is 169.254.192.215. shouldn't they be the same on both PC and laptop. You'll have to bare with me cos I'm very new to wireless connections. As I said before if I use the Belkin card I can connect with no problems.

No, it shouldn't be the same. It would be conflicting addresses and that's not good. So if the desktop is 10.0.0.1, try switching your laptop to something like 10.0.0.5, and see if it'll work. Mostlikely you'll have to restart first. To change the IP address:
- 1. right click your "My Network Places", select properties
- 2. then right click your wireless connections, and then select properties.
A new window comes up
- 3. select Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), click properties.
There you can change your IP address. Just change everything to look identical to your desktop settings, but the IP has to be different, try that 10.0.0.5. Hope it works out.

Not a problem, that's what these forums are for... :D

tried everything..........

and it still doesn't connect. I'm still getting the message unable to connect to DNS server or server unavailable.Have just enabled the Belkin wireless connection and it works just fine. Pity because I get much better signal reception from the centrino.
