Change the default File->Open folder?

Hi everyone.

I think the answer to this is probably no, but here goes... In a software program such as Word, when you go to File -> Open and it comes up with a window, is it possible to change the default folder which opens up? I am not using Word but a software package that manages data specific to a piece of analytical machinery in a laboratory, but perhaps the principle is the same. We are using Windows XP.

Many thanks

Tim

Afaik you can't set a default folder.
Tho, normally, with firefox/opera/... when you save an image in a folder, next time you try and save another image, the folder where you saved the first one, will appear as a default one.

I'm taking a blind chance here, but who knows it might be a nice idea, an .ini file, which redirects whatever folder you have as default on word, to another folder.

I dont think u will be able to change the default folder. But in most of the programs, the default folder moves to the last opened folder.

So if u want to ease this, move all ur favorite files into files to a folder and most probablily(spelling mistake) when u click file-> open, the last used folder will open which will have all ur favorites in one place.

Unless I'm missing something, it's fairly straightforward to change a Word default-open folder.

If you're using the latest version of Word (2007 I think):
click on Startup button in upper left
choose Word Options button on bottom (beside Exit Word button)
choose Advanced in list on left
scroll to second-to-last category called "General"
click "File Locations..." button
single-click on file type you want to change (most likely Documents since this is what drives the File...Open command)
click the "Modify..." button
navigate to the directory containing your documents
click OK
Voila - "File...Open" should now point to the directory you specified

You may have to close and re-open Word.

If you use an earlier version of Word (say 2003), you can accomplish the same thing. As I remember, it's through Tools...Preferences and there's a File Locations tab.

Hope this helps,
Larry
