Changed from Domain to Workgroup, now cannot log on

My laptop is from university, and when I "log on to windows" I enter Username and Password and below that is Domain. IT staff has total access to laptop with their account, but I am Admin as well.

I tried to share files via LAN cable from my laptop to another one, but it didn't work. So I went to My Computer --> Properties and under "Computer Name" I chose Change. Over there, the Domain was checked with label AUK.local
I changed it to Workgroup and restarted the laptop. Now when I am to log on there is no more Domain section, just Username and Password. And the problem is I CANNOT LOG ON with my user/pass. When I try to, it shows that Domain is incorrect.

I found many topics on internet with this issue, but none of them is solved. So I'm trying one more time.

Do you know what the computer name is? If you do, then the domain could be \\computername\username.
Also, if you're using WinXP, pressing ctrl+alt+delete twice will bring up a prompt where you should be able to type Administrator in the username section, and if you know the password to the root admin account, you can get in I think.

This was written under "Computer Name"

Full computer name: auk-nbb139.AUK.local
Domain: AUK.local

I know this for sure.

So according to what you said, I wrote under the Username:
\\AUK.local\my_username (I tried with small caps as well, )
also
\\AUK\my_username
also
\\auk-nbb139.AUK.local\my_username

...But it doesn't work.
And no, I don't have root-administrator password, that's the "secret" of IT staff i guess...

It's summer break and they do not work now :) And I also have some "illegal" software on it :D (one more reason to try solving the problem by myself) I wouldn't like them to see it because I'm already warned once

So, now when it's switched to Workgroup (I think I wrote "mshome" under it), is it possible to write any prefix in username for Domain, like you suggested? Or I should write something else for workgroup?

Wait, you can log in? I'm confused.
If you're worried about yer treasure, you could boot from a LiveCD of Windows called Hiren's Boot CD. Choose mini XP from the menu after you burn 'n' boot.

Try leaving the \\ before computername\username.

Also try mshome\username, or \\mshome\username.

No, I can't log in. I'm saying that I changed Domain to Workgroup and since then I cannot log in, so I'm trying these prefixes in front of username...
Doesn't work with those...

Well, I think you're best bet to stay out of trouble is to download the liveCD I linked to and get yer gems off (arrrgh) and then wait till school starts. Obviously you have a computer to use in the mean time.

Ok, so I've downloaded what you've told me, and I burned it to cd, inserted cd, but laptop doesn't pick it up because it is set up to HDD for boot sequence...

BIOS is locked with admin's password, I can see settings but I cant change them. Under Boot Sequence, it's only Internal HDD selected.

Yer stuck then, unless you want to risk resetting your BIOS and then trying to boot from the CD. Most of the time you remove the BIOS battery. Be careful not to get into trouble, though.

No thanks, I have already messed up enough :D
I'll just wait until classes begin, and then I'll ask IT technician to stay with him during repair, 'cause they have bad habit to avoid fixing the problem by formating C and reinstalling OS.
Thanks anyway, I learned some new stuff ;)
