Changing burners in an external enclosure

I currently have a LG external dvd burner in an external case that was purchased as a unit off of ebay. I am now looking into buying a lightscribe drive and am wondering if the power unit and wiring in the external case would be sufficient to change drives in the external unit. I would be purchasing an internal unit with the point of swapping dvd drives in the external unit with it. If someone could tell me whether or not this would work it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

it would work. IF they are both internal DVD/CD drives then they are interchangable. You shouldnt have a problem.

the original burner came in as an external drive but I believe that it is really supposed to be an internal one. Is there any way to check the compatability from the specs?

In general, it's fine. Open up the external case, and see if it's a regular DVD burner. If it is, and it uses the standard power and IDE cables, you can just replace it with a different burner. When doing so, remember to set the jumper to master.
