Changing computer name after O/S install?

Is there a way to change the name you gave the computer when you installed an O/S, after the fact?

Not the user account name but the actual PC name that gets attached to all the folders..etc.

Any way to do this without reinstalling again?

Yes, in XP its under "computer name" under system properties. Should be similar in W7 I would think.

It lets me change the computer name or description but the actual user name I guess its called?

You put it in when you install the o/s and it attaches itself to file names ..etc.

So you want to change the owner of the computer? That would be a registry setting you would have to edit. Google "how to change owner in windows 7"

Or are you wondering how to change your user name?

The first thing you said..

deeper than just a user name..I'm just not explaining it well.

What would you figure to be easier...edit registry values or just reformat and not mistype the name again..lol

thanx for your input thus far!

control panel
performance & maint
system
computer name tab.

give it a name so you know. who's is where.
laptop, mine, my wife, the kids.

sometime it can be hard who's is who's and what your looking at.
i have 5 computers. the one in the basement is called basement.
spells it all.

at least this is what im thinking he wants.
keep it unique.

Yeah, I dunno..I am basically selling my laptop and dont want to reformat but all the folders have my name in them..

I honestly can only see it changing the user name, but the folder extensions all have my name buried in them still!!

I'm guessing the only way to completely wipe that is to reformat with his name!
