changing hard drive on laptop

Hi, I have an old Toshiba M30 laptop with xp installed.

What I would like to do is remove the drive and install a new one and load Linux on it and keep the old one as spare in case I have problems with Linux.

I presume I just change drives over, set the boot to optical drive and bung in a Linux cd, load the op system and hope Linux recognises all the hardware.

Please correct me if I am wrong.

I think even ubuntu has a version for Laptops, because of the proprietary Drivers Laptops can have. Google should lead you in that direction.
 
ubuntu will run fine on most laptops. I think there is a hardware compatibility list for it out there somewhere though.

100% of linux distros are able to be used on laptops, but some need some work for drivers to run it.

Refer to the guide in my Sig if you have questions on setting up Ubuntu.
 
Many thanks for the help and the linux guide. All I need now is to find a hard drive that will fit.

I intend to install linux as the sole operating system.

I think that just about any IDE 2.5" drive will work in it. I would check to be sure that it is IDE though, it may be SATA.
 
I have taken the drive out and it is an IDE. I have found a site on the net that does Toshiba replacements but they are about twice the price of standard 2.5 drives.
I will take the drive with me next time I get into town.

Try newegg for drives. Or your local bestbuy. They are generally cheap.

Hard drives are really expensive right now because of flooding in their country of origin.
