I have a Compaq computer and the motherboard died. If I buy a new motherboard to replace the old one, would I be able to re-install windows with the key that comes in the label of the case?

It's Windows XP, and the computer is Compaq.

Thanks

Yes, that should work, as long as the OS is the same as what the key will work with... just make sure that the CPU will work with the new motherboard...

Eg - If it is an XP Home Key and you put XP Pro on the computer it won't work.... etc...

most likely yes, but wouldn't the os be already saved in your hdd ?

Yes it would, but when ever you get a new part like a motherboard you have to reinstall windows.... for drivers etc...

if you have the version of XP that the key is intended for, then yes it will work.

you just might get lucky and not have to do a reinstall of the OS. or perhaps be able to do a repair.

No matter what, he will have to do a full reinstall!

Drivers are incorrect. It will cause an unstable OS and possibly just give you a BSOD all the time.

but cohen said "no matter what" the guy will have to do a new OS install.

I have swapped mobos with no problems and just installed new mobo drivers. I have also had to repair windows upon new mobo installs.

the fact is that sometimes you have to do a new OS install and sometimes you do not.
