Changing my Graphic card!

Hello guys, i bought a computer for about 5 months ago, a Acer aspire M7720

intelcore i7 920
6 GB DDR3 Memory
1.5 GB Nvidia GTS 230
1 TB harddrive

The problem is that i realised now that my graphic card sucks, and since Battlefield bad company 2 has released it requires a graphic card that is good, and i only need to change my card to get better preformance and be able to run that game on high setting. Iam planning on buying a ATI HD 5830. the problem is i dont know if my netgear can handle that card, and i dont even know what netgear i got, and does ATU HD 5830 fit on my motherboard, because i got a Acer 58x motherboard

so my questions are

-How can i check what netgear i have and the electricity
-Does the card iam going to buy fit in my motherboard?
-and how much electricity does ATI HD 5830 require?
 
Well your board has two PCIe X16 slots, so it will fit your board. Might need to find out if your case has the room for the length of the card.

Dont know what you mean by if your netgear will support it? You need to know if your (power supply) will support it. Look and see what kind and watts and amps it has.

Well, as was said above, what do you mean by netgear? If you open up your case and look on either the top or the side of the power supply it should show how many watts it has. I do know that Acer pushes their power supplies to the limit, meaning that your system probably only has a 450 or 500w power supply; you might need to upgrade.

Yes.


-and how much electricity does ATI HD 5830 require?

ATI recommends a 500w power supply at a minimum, but you'd be better off going with about 650 watts, just to be safe. Acer probably has a cheap-o power supply in there, so you would probably want to upgrade to a name-brand company like Corsair or Asus.
 
ah ye thats what i meant, just couldnt find the right name for it :P, so i need to open my computer to see how power supply i have. and when you say that my board has 2x pcie x16 slots, does that mean i can put 2 graphic cards?

Maybe. It would be difficult to check, but you have to make sure that it's sli or crossfire compatible. If it's not, then no.
 
Don't get the 5830, it uses more power than the 5850, and gives less performance.

What size and resolution is your monitor? a 5770 is enough for 1280x1024, i can max crysis and dirt 2 at that resolution. :eek: with good framerates

I'd also like to add: that even if you have an SLI or Crossfire capable motherboard, you still need a monster power supply to handle the two cards. If you want two 5830s, then heck you'd probably need a 1000 watt power supply at least.:eek:

Are you sure that it comes with a 20% overclock? Don't they mean that you can get the card up to a 20% faster clock speed with MSI's Afterburner overclocking software? Either way, though, you could probably easily get that thing up to 20% with Afterburner. With that kind of cooler who knows how high you could bump up the voltage! :)

umm, a 650 watt would be plenty for 2 5830's

to OP- you would be best off getting a new power suopply, and another graphics card, then use the old one for physx

hmm, didn't think of that :o. That would make your upgrade cheaper, since you wouldn't need to get something much more powerful, with your old graphics card still operating alongside your new one. Do you need an SLI capable motherboard to do that, though? If you can, though, then you could get something like a Geforce GTX 275, and make your own version of this card:http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130527&cm_re=co-op-_-14-130-527-_-Product
 
For crossfire depending on what your running you'll need a psu from 850w-1000w, if you crossfire. 900w reccomended

For what, 5830s? If so its only a quality 500W for a single or 600W for CF. But i do admit I would go with alittle bigger one (probably a quality 650W/750W) but 900W is over kill.
